This next Saturday, Nancy and I will be leaving for Door County WI. Next week, July 23rd through the 28th, is the prestigious, invitational "Door County Plein Air Festival". This will be my 6th year being invited with 36 other plein air painters from all over the US and points beyond. I'm looking forward to seeing friends again that I've met there like James Richards and Cinnamon Rossman and friends I've made with patrons there, like the Sargents, June Mader, Mary & Mark Nosbisch, and many others.
I plan to enter every event and paint at designated areas where people can watch me paint, as I did other years. New this year, are two more parties, one in the beginning and one at the end, and that should be fun. My challenge this year is to paint different subject matter in beautiful Door County. It seems as though I have painted everything, but I know there is so much I haven't. Also new this year for me, is a different lighter weight easel setup, an "Open Box M" easel, that is very portable and easier and quicker to set up and disassemble. I also have some new umbrellas since I lost two last year to strong winds.
I love this event, but I have to be honest, it's intimidating, having only 5 days to produce 9-10 paintings. I do 3 paintings most days, even though I only have to frame 4 for the Gala Exhibit, but I need to have back-ups for replacement after sales. I have sold an average of 7 each year. I'm usually wasted after the event and am praying for cooler weather this year. Yes it would be nice to win an award this year too, but I have done well other years, so am going to just try to paint well, have fun, be positive, and let the chips fall where they may. Tom
